Original khaki pith helmet....
Our Pith Helmets are made to our specifications like the original cork pith helmets. They are individually handcrafted using a khaki cotton twill over a low-density cork with an adjustable leather inner head band and chin strap. The pugaree (bandana) is traditionally hand-layered in a light Indian cotton. Pith helmets are ideal for protection from the sun, great for safaris, tropical climates, gardening or that special occasion. Please note: As these are close outs, some of the pith helmets have slight defects due to packing and handling at the manufacturer - e.g. slight pressure dents in the helmet or small marks on the cloth. We inspect all pith helmet for the best possible helmet. So If you are not too fussy with these types of small defects you can get a great helmet at a great price. |

Adjustable headband - Each Pith Helmet has an adjustable headband that will adjust half a size larger or smaller. Hat Size * - If you are not sure of your hat size, measure the circumference of your head, measured around the top of your head just above where your ears are attached to your head. |

| A Bit of History |
|
The pith helmet was traditionally used by the military colonial forces of Europe, Africa, India and the United States. It received widespread recognition as the head-dress for notable missionaries such as Stanley and Dr. Livingstone, and became the standard head-wear for anyone traveling to the tropics from the 1840's to the turn of the century.

The range of hats had expanded significantly over the years and has been used by the Victorian Cavalry in the Boer and Punjabi Wars, the Italian Abyssinian War, the Foreign Legion in North Africa and the US Marine 1880 hat.
The hat was originally made of pith bark from indigenous trees (paper bark trees) and covered in a cotton twill fabric. When soldiers returned to England from duty in Africa or India, the cold and wet climatic conditions caused these hats to shrink and collapse. As a result, cork was used in making the hat instead of pith bark. |
